Postpartum Recovery

Life after birth is a time of adjustment — physically, mentally, and emotionally. At DRV Health, our GPs support you during the postpartum period with assessments, recovery planning, and referrals to allied health providers when needed. The aim is to help you heal well, regain strength, and feel confident in caring for your baby.

Diastasis of Recti Abdominal Muscle (DRAM)

During pregnancy, many women experience a separation of the abdominal muscles as the uterus expands. This is called diastasis recti. For most, the muscles gradually come back together after birth, but in some cases, the gap remains and can cause:

  • A visible bulge or “doming” in the tummy

  • Lower back or pelvic pain

  • Poor core stability or weakness

Your GP can assess for DRAM at your postnatal check. Management may include:

  • Targeted physiotherapy (pelvic floor & core rehabilitation exercises)
  • Support garments to reduce strain during recovery
  • Referral to women’s health physiotherapists for tailored programs

Why Postpartum Recovery Matters

Every woman’s recovery is different. With the right support, complications such as long-term incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, or persistent abdominal weakness can often be prevented. Postnatal rehabilitation empowers you to recover well and feel strong again — both physically and emotionally.
